CUPE 3903 STEWARDS

Unit 1 steward(s) representing Teaching Assistants
Unit 3 steward(s) representing Graduate Assistants and some Research Assistants Representatives attend CUPE 3903 meetings, contribute to decision-making and report back to the GPSSA at our monthly meetings.
SOCIAL EVENTS ORGANIZING COMMITTEE
No limit to available positions (typically at least one MA and one PhD student)
This committee will meet when required to plan activities including social events and workshops.
GRADUATE STUDENTS’ ASSOCIATION (GSA) COUNCIL
2 positions
The GSA is the representative organization of graduate students at York. The GSA reps serve as liaisons between Politics students and the Council. Meetings are held monthly. Attendance is mandatory.
COUNCIL OF THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDIES (FGS)
1 position
This council is the policy-making body of FGS. It is composed of faculty from the graduate program and a student from each program. It normally meets twice per term. FGS allows for one representative from each department to have voting rights.
DEPARTMENTAL COUNCIL
4 positions
This council meets twice per term to discuss issues relating to the department, such as hiring and undergraduate course offerings. All subcommittees report to this council which is under the departmental Chair. Graduate students have four votes on this committee.

CANADIAN POLITICS: 2 positions
COMPARATIVE POLITICS: 2 positions
INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS: 2 positions
POLITICAL THEORY: 2 positions
WOMEN AND POLITICS: 2 positions
Field committees are made up of a faculty field coordinator and all members of the faculty who each or do research in their respective fields. Meetings are held as required to discuss hiring and other matters of concern.
TENURE AND PROMOTION COMMITTEE
1 position
This committee consists of the Chair, 6 faculty reps chosen by the fields, a graduate rep and an undergraduate rep. It reviews applications and makes recommendations on professors who are under up for tenure positions or promotions within the program.
RECRUITMENT COMMITTEE
1 position
This committee consists of the Chair, the Undergraduate Program Director, the Graduate Program Director, and 5 faculty reps, one chosen by each field, a graduate rep, and an undergraduate rep. It reviews up to several hundred applications, meets to determine a short list of candidates, and attends several interviews in efforts to make a tenure-stream hire.
GRADUATE COUNCIL
2 positions
This council is open to all graduate faculty members and graduate students, but we elect 2 positions to ensure presence and continuity at these meetings.
GRADUATE COUNCIL EXECUTIVE
2 positions
This committee, which is chaired by the Graduate Program Director, is composed of field representatives and two general graduate student representatives. It makes recommendations on the program and meets on an irregular basis.
PhD ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE
1-2 PhD positions
This committee does its work in February and March and reviews the applications of prospective doctoral students to the department.
MA ADMISSIONS COMMITTEE
1 PhD position
This committee does its work in February and March and reviews the applications of prospective master’s students to the department.
